This metal Warhammer 40K Space Marine in Mark II Crusade Armour is one of the Armour Variants sculpts by Jes Goodwin. He’s a 1990 sculpt. It was part number 070270/8 in the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

As far as I’m aware this would be the first Mark II armour sculpt (some 32 years old at the time of writing).

    Work in progress:

    Paints used:

Blue: Scale75 Artist Cobalt, built up to Primary Blue, down to Prussian Blue, highlighted with Primary Blue/Art White mix.

Gold: Necro Gold, Viking Gold, Elven Gold, Citrine Alchemy then White Alchemy. Shaded with Chestnut Ink.

Black: Art Black, highlighted with Artic Blue, shaded with Nuln oil.

Leather: Burnt Skin, shaded with Garaghak’s Sewer, highlighted with Burnt Skin mixed with a little Primary Yellow.

Silver: Black Metal, shaded with Nuln Oil, highlighted with Speed Metal

Red: Primary Red highlighted with a mix of Primary Red and Orange.

    A 360 degree view:

You can see Jes Goodwin’s sketch of Mk8 armour in the Index Astartes Apocrypha book (will be from a WD issue somewhere I haven’t found yet):

I painted this chap up as a squad leader for a Tactical squad, and did his left knee in chequered company colours. A WIP of his knee:

    Colours used:

    Undercoat: Vallejo Mecha Black

Base coat: Scale75 Cobalt Blue, brought up with Primary Blue, shaded with Prussian Blue, highlighted with a mix of Primary Blue and Art White

Red: Art White, followed by Primary Red, shaded with Crimson, shaded with a mix of Prussian Blue and Primary Red, highlighted with a mix of Primary Red and Orange

  • Metal Dark Angels Captain in Artificer Armour Rogue Trader Warhammer 40K

Metal Dark Angels Captain in Artificer Armour Rogue Trader Warhammer 40K

This metal Rogue Trader-era Space Marine Dark Angels Captain was part number 070268/5 in the 1991 catalogue. He’s a 1990 Jes Goodwin sculpt.

    Undercoat: Vallejo Mecha Black

Green: Scale75 Artist Sap Green and Spring Green, highlighted with Spring Green/Pro Acryl Titanium White

White: Pro Acryl Titanium White, washed with Targor Rageshade

Sword: Pro Acryl Burnt Red/Bold Pyrrole Red/Art Black/Golden Yellow/Titanium White

Gold: Necro Gold, washed with Targor Rageshade, then Elven Gold, then Citrine Alchemy, then White Alchemy

Base: Scale75 Soilworks Rough Ground mixed with Woodland Scenics rocks. Base coat of Mechanicus Grey, then a drybrush of Dawnstone, then Ulthuan Grey, then White Scar. Then I decided I didn’t like it as much as I expected and put Scale75 Soilworks Ash all over the base and highlighted with Soilworks Gypsum. Rim of Vallejo Mecha Black.

Chequered knee: Scale75 Pastel Green and Titanium White.

Red: Scale75 Art Black, then Pro Acryl Burnt Red, then Bold Pyrrole Red, then Golden Yellow

In the end mixing the Rough Ground with the larger Woodland Scenic chunks produced a texture that was a bit more liquid-y than I was happy with – live and learn, though.
