Metal Corvus Armour 2 Rogue Trader Space Marine 070270 3

This guy is from the Armour Variants set which was designed by Jes Goodwin and the Citadel Design Team. He’s a 1990 sculpt and shows up in the 1991 catalogue as part number 070270/3. The earliest I can find him in a White Dwarf is March 1990:

The blurb for the Armour Variants goes:

“In the last 5000 years the design of Space Marine armour has evolved through many stages, from Mark 1 to the Mark 8. Many chapters still use all the different types, with the early models regarded as the Chapters Heirlooms. These early armours, once worn by the Chapter’s greatest heroes, have been embellished by the Chaplains Artificers, who create the Chapters equipment and honour badges.”

Nothing on the front or back of the tab on this one, unfortunately.

    Undercoat: Vallejo Mecha Black

Blue: Scale75 Art Cobalt Blue, combined with Pro Acryl Titanium White for lighter areas and Scale75 Art Black for darker.

Red: Pro Acryl Bold Pyrrole Red, shaded with Targor Rageshade, highlighted with Bold Pyrrole Red/Golden Yellow

Green: Scale75 Art Spring Green, shaded with Art Black, highlighted with Golden Yellow

Silver: Black Metal, Targor Rageshade, Heavy Metal, Speed Metal

Base: Scale75 Soilworks Reddish Brown around edges, then Dark Mud over that to try something different, then Natural Soil, then Sand in the center, highlight on the rock was Gypsum. The legs were dusted with Natural Soil.

Rim: Vallejo Model Colour Black Grey

  • Vintage Metal Blood Angels Death Company Chaplain 0424 1

  • Metal Thunder Warrior Rogue Trader Pre-Space-Marine Miniature 070270 9

This guy is the Mk1 Marine! A 1990 sculpt by Jes Goodwin. Part number 070270/9.

    • Undercoat: Vallejo Mecha Black
    • Blue: Scale75 Art Cobalt Blue
  • Metal Space Marine Rogue Trader Bike 072060 1

This bike came in two parts and was part number 072060/1 – no rider yet, still looking…

    Bolters for brakes? Yes please…

  • Vintage Rogue Trader Space Marine with Terminator Honours – Power Glove and Bolter

Vintage Rogue Trader Space Marine with Terminator Honours – Power Glove and Bolter

This guy appears in the Winter 1990 and the 1991 catalogues along with two other Marines with Terminator Honours (both just with a bolter). Part number 070145/4.

The tab says Terminator on the front. Not sure if the back has been filed down or what happened there but both copies of this mini I have found have a blank back.

    First attempt at painting:

    • Undercoat: Vallejo Mecha Black
    • Blue: Scale75 Artist Light Ultramarine built up to Cobalt Blue, then Primary Blue
    • Red: Scale75 Artist Crimson then Primary Red highlighted by a mix of Primary Red and Orange
    • Silver: Scale75 Black Metal, washed with Instant Shadow Black, followed by Heavy Metal and highlighted with Speed Metal
    • Gold: Necro Gold, washed with Guilliman Flesh, then Elven Gold, then Peridot Alchemy mixed with Citrine Alchemy, highlighted with Citrine Alchemy
    • White hair: Scale75 Artist White, washed with Instant Golem Grey, highlight White
    • Eyes: Scale75 Artist White, iris attempt Primary Blue, pupil Black
    • Flesh: Scale75 Light Skin, wash Guilliman Flesh, highlight Light Skin
    • Leather: Burnt Sienna Umber highlighted with a mix of that and Pale Flesh
    • Varnish: Vallejo Mecha Gloss under Matt

I still haven’t quite put on enough matte varnish to overcome the gloss as I really wasn’t a fan of the gloss look on the Marine armour. This particular miniature also had a lot of areas of poor casting – the detail on the back of the power glove is pretty vague and there seems to be some chunky flash still attached to his left shoulderpad. Possibly recast, possibly just a dodgy cast… hard to say!

  • Metal Space Marine Strike Force Marine 2 RTB15 2

This guy came out in the 1990-ish Space Marine Strike Force box, and is Space Marine 2 from it. Part number RTB15/2.

I have a second variant with a different head:

  • Vintage Rogue Trader Space Marine Brother Longun or Anderton with Heavy Bolter

Vintage Rogue Trader Space Marine Brother Longun or Anderton with Heavy Bolter

The heavy bolters were a little bit smaller way back when…

Later shown as Space Marine armed with Heavy Bolter, part number 070121/48.

    Painted but not based:

I tried my version of speed painting on this guy… which means about 2 days worth of painting effort.

    Undercoat: Vallejo Mecha Black

    Edge highlights: Scale75 Primary Blue

Recesses: Scale75 Instant Fairy Blood, darker areas Instant Shadow Black
